When implementing an environmental management system, it is essential to define the scope of the environmental management system and whether there are delimitations within one's own organization. The University shall also define the management of the organisation and whether there are collaboration agreements with other organisations.
Education and research are the university's most important contribution to sustainable development and the University of Gothenburg aims to become one of Europe's leading universities in the field.
The University of Gothenburg strives to educate responsible and democratic members of society and offers education that is characterized by great breadth and that responds to the needs of both students and the outside world. The University of Gothenburg offers education to everyone regardless of background and recruits employees from different cultures. The University works in close collaboration with the outside world and is an active and appreciated intermediary of knowledge.
In response to the major societal challenges, the University of Gothenburg initiates research that gathers our strength and expertise across faculty, department and area boundaries. The aim is a multidisciplinary collaboration where different approaches are taken into account. The challenges facing humanity today are so complex that no scientific discipline can process them effectively on its own. These challenges include demographic trends, migration patterns, climate change, challenges in medicine and health, energy and food security, and financial crises and change. Global challenges do not stop at state borders. They affect the world as a whole, even if it takes place within the framework of local contexts, political and natural conditions.
The UN's Agenda 2030 and global goals for sustainable development provide a framework for these global challenges at all levels of society, including at the University of Gothenburg. Nationally, the University's environmental and sustainability work is governed by legal requirements such as the Higher Education Act Chapter 1, Section 5 and the Regulation (2009:907) on environmental management in government agencies.
There are many actors who influence the work on sustainable development at the University of Gothenburg. These actors are the University's stakeholders, and their requirements and expectations forthe University's activities are listed in the document below. Compliance with environmental legislation requirements and other binding commitments is monitored annually.
The University has an environmental management system certified according to ISO 14001 and registered according to the EU Regulation EMAS since 2004. The Vice-Chancellor is the University's top management and is responsible for the environmental management system.
The environmental management system covers all activities within the university; research, education at basic and advanced level, collaboration with the surrounding society, administration and other support activities. The University Board and internal audit are not covered by the environmental management system.
The environmental management system covers all physical locations where the above-mentioned activities are conducted. Where the University's activities are conducted integrated, or co-located, with another organisation, an interface agreement may clarify the commitment and responsibilities of the University and other organisations.
